The bright colors and simple pictures make this story a fun and easy read. Older children and adults will appreciate the message of not worrying about the small things in life. They will also enjoy Pete’s simple silly song about his shoes. Young children will love learning their colors as Pete’s shoes change color. He keeps walking along and singing his song:

Pete doesn’t get upset when his shoes get dirty. At the end he steps in water and his shoes become white again. Each item that he steps in changes his shoes to that color. He steps in blueberries, strawberries, and mud. Pete loves his new white shoes, but he keeps getting them dirty. Looking for your next read? • Glue the whole shirt except for the piece in the middle so that the middle piece can be lifted up to show the stomach and the “button”-the story’s finale.
  • Cut the buttons out of felt (but do not glue them so that they can be “popped”off at the appropriate places in the story).
